What is Diabetes?

Diabetes refers to a group of metabolic diseases where an individual has high blood glucose over a long period of time, sometimes even a lifetime. Type 1 diabetes occurs due little or no production of insulin by the pancreas and Type 2 diabetes is due to high blood glucose in the background of insulin resistance.

Diabetes is a chronic disease, which means it can be controlled but not cured.

The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) has released a Diabetes Atlas which talks about the grave situation of diabetes in various countries around the world. Here are some startling facts about this chronic killer in India.

Among the South East Asian countries, India has the highest number of Diabetes related deaths (among people in the age group of 20-79) with 1.1 million deaths in 2013.
